What Makes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu  at Jade Mountain Your "Secret Weapon" to Getting Better, Faster?
At JMMA, you get the Best Techniques of 3 top grappling arts!
Our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program is taught by a 35 year veteran of the grappling/throwing arts including Judo, Sambo, as well as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

The class is designed so that beginners can participate and learn applicable grappling skills from day one, and eventually progress all the way to black belt.

It is a fun and relaxed learning environment that is great for both casual practitioner and competitive athlete.

As the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program in Katy, the original Jade Mountain BJJ Program spawned many of the other schools in the area. That means that black belts and instructors at other schools got their training with us.

But don't worry about being overwhelmed.  The atmosphere in class is very laid-back and easygoing, yet our students often claim top honors and medals at competitions, quite often winning in very decisive fashion.

We get nervous beginners every week and rather than showing them how "tough" we think we are (which many schools do), we instead teach with patience and purpose.

What can you expect From your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class?
Class begins with a short warm-up and then discussion of the technique of the day.  As a student, you will practice the technique with different partners and take instruction on how to do the movement correctly.

Next, come the drills in which you will assume a particular position (side control, mount, half-guard).  From there, you and your partner are given specific goals.  One such example might be where Partner "A" defends his/her position while Partner "B" tries to change their position.

The class ends with sparring (called rolling) where students try to 'submit' their partner using the techniques they have learned.

It is a great workout, and lots of fun!

Most people worry that they won't be able to learn or that they'll get hurt, but that's not true.  Although the class is very physical, everyone trains with respect, and no one is deliberately trying to show off by hurting anyone else.

Sensei Paul is an extremely adept instructor, and knows how to express the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in an articulate and clear manner, one move at a time, so that each student can understand better.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was formed from Kodokan judo ground fighting fundamentals. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu eventually came to be its own art through the experiments, practices, and adaptation of judo through the Gracie family.

BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger, heavier assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments and in self-defense situations.  Sparring (commonly referred to as rolling) and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition, in relation to progress and ascension through its ranking system.

Since its inception in 1882, its parent art of judo was separated from older systems of Japanese jujutsu by an important difference that was passed on to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: it is not solely a martial art, but it is also a sport; a method for promoting physical fitness and building character in young people; and, ultimately, a way (Do) of life.
