Many folks have questions about martial arts in general, and others don't know what to expect when visiting a martial arts school. Here are some of the most common questions I've been asked.
What's the difference between Kung Fu and Tae Kwon Do/Karate?
Kung Fu utilizes a more flowing, circular style of movement than the other styles, and we also incorporate joint-locking, weapons, throws, and groundfighting into our system. TKD is primarily a kicking art, and both Karate and TKD have little or no emphasis on joint locks, throws, or grappling skills.
What's the best age to start training in martial arts?
Well, what age are you? We have classes for those as young as 4 and as old as…well, as old as you happen to be at the moment. We structure our classes so that each age group can train to their particular level of effort and make progress.
I've got a belt from another school, do I have to start over as a white belt?
We teach a very special curriculum here at Jade Mountain. We have several folks who currently hold black belts in other arts, but they chose to start over as white belts with us. If you have solid fundamental skills, then you will most likely progress faster in the beginning levels, and then we'll see where to take you from there. As Bruce Lee once said, it's important to 'empty your cup' from time to time.
I've heard that MMA (Mixed Martial Arts, Ultimate Fighting) is best. Can traditional Kung Fu really help me to defend myself?
Yes, indeed! I've spent over 25 years training in martial arts, including boxing, kickboxing, kung fu, karate, judo, BJJ, and taiji. What I've seen is that many folks who learn traditional arts simply aren't taught how to use them properly. In our style of Mantis Boxing, we teach striking with hands, feet, elbows, knees, and shins, as well as grappling and groundfighting so that our students are capable and confident in all ranges of combat.
Do I have to spend hours in the gym every day if I want to get in shape?
No, you really don't. We can teach you how to work out effectively, in a minimum of time, and without expensive equipment. Using a variety of strength-building, endurance, and stretching exercises, we'll show you how to work your whole body while increasing your coordination, balance, and learning the ancient art of Kung Fu.
I really need to lose some weight. Will this class be right for me?
YES!! Check out our testimonial page and see what our students say. We'll be happy to discuss your goals and how we can help you to meet them.
Should I take some time to get in shape before joining your class?
Certainly not! We structure our classes in a way that allows for new students who have never worked out before to train right next to experienced students who are already fit and strong. What matters is that you work out at your own pace, learn the exercises, and enjoy yourself. We'll help you get there!
What about prices? Do I have to keep upgrading every few months?
Our classes range from $85 to $150 per month, and we also offer an all-inclusive Family Program if you have multiple family members who want to train with us! There's only one upgrade from a Basic Program for adults to a Black Sash program. In addition to the high quality training you'll always receive at Jade Mountain, our Black Sash program also includes quite a few valuable benefits, such as discounts at our Pro Shop, discounts on Seminars, free private lessons, and so on!
And how long will it take to get my black belt?
It depends on how often you train, both in class and at home. The minimum is around 3 years. We are not in the business of giving belts away just because you've attended x number of classes. Each student learns at a different rate, so we want to teach you according to your capabilities. You'll be tested for each sash only when you're truly prepared to do so.
These are easily the most common questions I've been asked, but you might have others, so feel free to ask away!
